Chopra and Oprah, At It Again

You may have noticed the phenomenon that someone is always socialmedia-sharing their progression through one Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra meditation program or another. They’ve become very popular. After all, who wouldn’t want to take a lesson from these two inspirational people? Plus, who can argue against the benefits of daily meditation?

My friends and family certainly seem more grateful and shiny as they write about what they have learned about life and themselves on any given day of the programs.

I want in! Not only does daily meditation always sound like a fun and worthy intention, but getting a syllabus and a daily pat on the back might be the right recipe to get it beyond my fits and starts.

So when a friend sent me this……

…I said, “Sign me up!”

The program begins on July 13th. I don’t know exactly what it entails, but away we go! If you like the idea of guided daily meditation and an online community with whom to enjoy the experience, join us!! I definitely know myself well enough to know that I will NOT be posting regular “Today I am grateful for…” posts, but I’ll try to share some thoughts and updates. It’s always more fun if we do it together. 🙂

Weekend To-Do (Good) List

You know how it works. Life As a Wave is focused on recognizing our connection with each other, our inner selves, Source, the animal kingdom, and the natural world around us. Our relationships with these elements of life require our personal responsibility to make more positive connection.  In short, we all have the chance and the calling to DO GOOD. God knows the world needs more of it.

It’s not always easy, but this list makes it easier. This weekend, take some time to nurture your connections and make them more positive. Have fun with it and spread the word!

~~~S Wave~~~
1. Autism Awareness Day
April is Autism Awareness Day and the 2nd was World Autism Awareness Day. By now you probably know that the growing rate of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is startling. It is the fastest growing developmental disability. In March, the CDC released new statistics for autism prevalence, 1 in 68 children. It was 1 in 88 just a few years ago.
This is a life-long disability with varying degrees of impairments. There isn’t a cure for ASD, much less a known cause. While the scientific world scrambles for understanding amidst competing possible factors, the therapeutic services such as speech and language pathology, occupational therapy and behavior interventions continue to bring support and skill development to individuals with ASD and their families at the average annual family cost of $60,000.
Whether or not you personally know someone with ASD, your life will be impacted by this disorder, if in no other way than by the growing percentage of individuals with ASD that will be in our shared communities in years to come. Families raising a child with autism need support. They need understanding and community. This mother, a parent of 3 girls with autism, explains why and how she would like to see Autism Awareness Month become Autism Action Month in :
My three daughters are autistic. I despise Autism Awareness Month.
Her suggestions in the last paragraph are worth directly quoting. They are:
1. Give to an organization that provides service dogs for autistic children.
2. Serve as a volunteer as an autism buddy.
3. If your child has a classmate on the spectrum, invite that classmate to your child’s next birthday party.
4. You know that cashier at the grocery store who doesn’t look at you as she takes care of your order? Smile at her, even if she does not smile back.
Will you begin to transform your awareness into action?
2. Cosmetic Testing
This is Easter weekend and you can’t help but think of cute, fuzzy bunnies. Last week we warned against buying a rabbit for a gift for this holiday. There is, however, a way that you can honor and celebrate the long-eared cotton-tailed cutie patooties this weekend. Make an effort to stop the use of rabbits in cosmetic product testing!
I know that the questions of animal testing for scientific advancement is whole separate complicated issue. But, can we agree that testing on rabbits to develop better face soaps and eyeliners is a barbaric practice with no real value? Even for household products, shouldn’t we all be trying to use natural ingredients anyway that don’t require testing of all kinds of chemicals and toxins??
If you agree, here are some things you can do:
First, look for the Leaping Bunny symbol on cosmetic and household products before you purchase. No bunny, no money!
Second, commit to a fresh, cruelty-free start. Take a look in for medicine cabinet and under your sink. Do you have products with these brands on them:
If so, are you willing to throw them out and find a more animal-friendly replacement? This is one I’m going to do for sure. I know I have some of these brands hiding out in my house. Time for spring cleaning!
Third, talk talk talk! Spread the word, especially on Easter. You can’t walk your talk if you don’t have any talk to begin with. Tell people how you feel about this kind of testing and make a pact with them to make a change.
 3. Gratitude Practice
Today is Good Friday, a Christian remembrance day of Jesus’ crucifixion. It is also the first day of Passover, the Jewish remembrance of the Israelite’s divinely-guided escape from Egyptian enslavement. It is a day of gratitude, a virtue celebrated by leading religions and faiths worldwide. A virtue also that has been shown to be good for a person’s mental, emotional, and physical health.
passoverToday, no matter what you personally celebrate, I think we can take this divine energy of gratitude that is so strong in our hearts today and share it with people around us. Doing so honors God, honors yourself, and honors others. Here are some ways:
Happy-Good-Friday-2015-Quotes1First, think of one person (at least!) who has done something for you recently without a “thank you.” Maybe you forgot to say it…maybe you were in a hurry…maybe you were withholding a bit?  Now go give them a genuine “thank you.” Look them in the eye when you say it, touch their hand or give them a hug.
Second, think of one person (at least!) who has wronged you without saying, “I’m sorry.” Maybe they forgot to say it…maybe they were in a hurry…maybe they were withholding a bit.  In your heart, forgive them. Try thinking of all the reasons you can be thankful for having them in your life. Even the most challenging person can be seen as someone who has helped us grow and strengthen so there is at least ONE reason to be grateful for everyone.
Third, resolve to embark on a Gratitude Month…or Week…or Year…whatever you feel works best for you! Every day, start the morning with a statement of gratitude for something. Share it with others and carry it with you throughout your day. For a great guide on doing a 21-day gratitude challenge click here.
I’ll kick us off by telling you all that I appreciate every single moment that you have taken out of your days to read these words that I write with love. Writing Life As a Wave is one of the most treasured tasks I have ever taken on. Thank you, thank you, thank you for being a part of if.
Have a beautiful weekend. If you are celebrating a holy holiday, may it be a blessed time with family and friends.
With gratitude,
Kermit, Osho and Cherry Blossoms for a Birthday
images-2Kermit is so wise. While I was recently watching him portray Bob Cratchit in the holiday hit, “The Muppet Christmas Carol,” I was struck by one of his lines:
Life is made up of meetings and partings; that is the way of it.
Or at least that is the way it seems, isn’t it?
Today is my birthday. It has been raining in Los Angeles this week which has been beautiful and refreshing. And as I began to ruminate on the past year of life, I embraced this rain as a washing away of the mistakes and challenges and heartbreaks. What is left standing, strongly rooted, are the moments of love, learning, and redemption. Thank god for those things.
Yes, I think we meet and we part. We meet a new part of ourselves we have never understood or acknowledged; we must part with a familiar inner-me which no longer serve us. We meet a new person brought into our life for a purpose (aren’t they all?); we must part with someone else. We meet a long-sought dream as it begins finally to manifest in our lives; we must part with dreams that are no longer meant to be.
So much pull and push. Yin and Yang. Struggle and growth. Like chicks wrestling to get free from the only reality they have ever known, we keep working toward the next level of our own personal evolution. Whether we know it or not, that is what we are doing. Life is always conspiring to keep us going toward the best us we can be with the time we have. We just get caught up in old things that keep us from being, doing, and having what we need.
What worn-out shticks are blinding you to the blessings that life is conspiring to give you?
– Rob Breszny
What’s my point?
It’s my birthday and I’m not sure I have a specific point and I’m not sure where Kermit fits in, but it’s my birthday so I’m gonna let incoherence rule just this once.
I guess I think that the meetings and the partings, all of that which seems like the struggle, is for our good if we accept it as that. If we believe in interconnection at all the levels we have talked about here on Life As a Wave, then NOTHING is ever really parted with, NOTHING is ever really met except at our most simplistic level of awareness. It all exists at once and IS one. And that One is GOOD. Always good, always.
Yeah, I don’t really understand it all either. I haven’t “met” that level of my own understanding yet. 😉
But I can confidently say that I will let myself take comfort in my firm belief that all the aforementioned mistakes and challenges and heartbreaks of my last year of life were FOR GOOD. Maybe I don’t need to let this L.A. rain wash them away after all. Maybe I will choose a different metaphor….I will let this rain irrigate my life and all the GOOD SEEDS that were planted in my life with every mistake I admitted, every challenge I met, and every 1924833_10152849959783908_6217519216850494870_nheartbreak I endured.
And voila, now that I’ve let the good things be good, and added the “bad” things to the good as well, it’s all good!
It’s not always that easy of course…it’s just easy to write. And the idea that we are the only ones responsible for our experience of happiness or suffering can be a hard pill to swallow and can sure rile up some defensive parts in us. “Screw you, Osho! You don’t know what I’ve been through!”  Oh my.
But what is the alternative? To believe that we are at the whim of experiences and chance? To believe that if we are good enough we will be blessed more than someone else might be? As much as I hate to say it sometimes and with an emphasis on NOT using this to shame or embarrass anyone else, I do think that we create our experience. But the “choosing” to be happy can be one of the hardest assignments ever…could take a lifetime in fact.
With all that, I am choosing the irrigation, not the cleansing flood. I am waiting with expectation to see what blossoms in this next year of life. It’s going to be another zinger I’m sure!
Don’t Stress Over the Stressors!
A stressor is an outside agent, such as a death in the family, math problem or an exam, boring job, and so on. Stress is how a person reacts or responds to a stressor, which means what mental meaning he or she puts to the stressor and how he or she mentalizes the feeling associated with the reaction to the stressor.
Amit Goswami, The Quantum Doctor
Let’s agree to savor this holiday season as much as we can. Life is too short to let stressors lead to stress. Here is a quick guide to staying zen during the holidays.
Happy Thanksgiving preparations everyone!
Proclamation of Gratitude
Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” ~ Melody Beattie
It has been two years since I began this blog with some dear friends and family. There has been so much learning and exploration in that time. Wondering about connection and coming to understand it more from all sorts of different perspectives. Approaching also an understanding of my own dreams and their possible grander purposes.
A friend recently reminded me that we sometimes teach what it is that we most need to learn and although I don’t know if I have taught anyone much of anything here, I know that I have learned. And I know that it has been a wonderful experience to share that road with many wonderful people.
In this month the holidays are approaching with all of the excitement, nostalgia and odd melancholy that can come with that visitation. A milestone birthday also approaches for me in December causing me to reflect a great deal, with both yearning for the many unrealized hopes of these past years and with affection and not a little awe for those many that are realized and thriving. Finally, it seems social media is saturated right now with sentiments of gratitude in honor of Thanksgiving.
So in light of these events aligning as they are, it seems like a good time to share in the spirit of gratitude…not only to be grateful for this month of thanks, but to remind my own heart of the great unearned blessings and the ever-renewed potential that we are constantly experiencing in life if we will just hold on and believe in them.  And so…..
Thank you for this life.
Thank you for the beauty I contribute to this life.
Thank you for the divinity that fills us and inspires the beauty I contribute to this life.
Thank you for the people who have guided me toward the divinity that fills us and inspires the beauty I contribute to this life.
Thank you for the love I have learned from the people who have guided me toward the divinity that fills us and inspires the beauty that I contribute to this life.
Thank you for the love I have learned from the people who have guided me toward the divinity that fills us, connects us and inspires the beauty that I contribute to this life.
Thank you for the love I have learned from the people who have guided me toward the divinity that fills us, connects us and inspires the beauty that I contribute to this life as I grow in strength through every experience of both joy and pain.
Thank you for the love I have learned from the people who have guided me toward the divinity that fills us, connects us and inspires the beauty that I contribute to this life on our precious Earth as I grow in strength through every experience of both joy and pain.
Much love to you all. Happy holiday season and may you be abundantly blessed through acceptance of the blessings that are at all times at your fingertips.
Are You Number 100??
Okay, now you know some of you bloggers have thousands of followers, probably tens of thousands of comments, hundreds of posts, but Life As a Wave is the little engine that could and enjoys being so. I LOVE watching our community expand and every new follower feels like a bud opening in our garden of connection. Today I saw that we have reached 99 followers! This makes me so humbled and happy. I think the little engine just reached a pretty cool hilltop.
Emerson with your Friday? Yes, please.
The Memorial Day weekend is off to a great start! This month is now officially the most-viewed month that ~~~Life As a Wave~~~ has experienced since our grand unveiling in October. Okay…maybe not what might seem like a great many visits in a month – 531 – but enough for us to feel blessed and excited as we start this process and see where it takes us. With many of you who are now following our posts I have felt a strong togetherness in our thoughts, philosophies, and visions for ourselves and our world. It has been amazing to encounter you and we look forward to more connecting with you and growing because of you. Here is an Emerson quote that is dedicated to YOU today!! Thank you, as always, for reading. Thank you for subscribing. Thank you for being you.
~~~the Waves~~~

My friends have come to me unsought. The great God gave them to me. By oldest right, by the divine affinity of virtue with itself, I find them, or rather not I, but the Deity in me and in them derides and cancels the thick walls of individual character, relation, age, sex, circumstance, at which he usually connives, and now makes many one. High thanks I owe you, excellent lovers, who carry out the world for me to new and noble depths, and enlarge the meaning of all my thoughts.
